Essay #1

Gilgamesh

Your essay on Gilgamesh should deal with one of the following topics:

1. The role of women in Gilgamesh

2. The struggle between nature and civilization in Gilgamesh

3. The relationship between gods and mortals in Gilgamesh

Your paper should have a thesis, which should be clearly stated near the beginning of the paper. It should have points to prove that thesis.

Use examples and quotes from the work to illustrate your points. Indicate the page numbers for quotes and references to the story by putting them in parentheses, like this (34). Use italics when referring to the name of the story (“We read Gilgamesh”) but not when referring to the character (“Gilgamesh was a king”).

THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PAPER. Do not use quotes from any source except Gilgamesh.  It is also not an opinion piece or a book report. Do not tell me what you think of the story. Do not retell the story. Just show what is in the story that illustrates your thesis.

Length:  1000 words minimum

Papers must be typed or done on a word processor. They should be done with standard margins, double-spaced, in a plain 12-point typeface.

You should also email me a copy of your essay. Only documents with file names “doc” or “docx” can be sent as attachments. Any other documents must be copied and pasted into the body of the email.

Remember that papers turned in after the due date will be marked down one full grade (e.g., B becomes C). No Gilgamesh papers will be accepted after the midterm. Remember also that I’m not your cleaning lady. Sloppy papers full of typos and careless errors will be returned to the student for proofreading before being graded and will then be counted as late.
